The Hejaz Railway was originally built to transport pilgrims from Damascus to Madinah, where they would travel on to Makkah for the Haj. The railway reached Madinah in 1908. The train station at the northern edge of Madain Saleh and consists of 16 buildings that date back to the Ottoman Empire. It is one of the most important stations along the Hijaz railway. It is characterized for its architectural style and was used as a rest area, accommodations and a restaurant for passengers. It consists of a workshop for the maintenance of trains. Parts of a train still remain at the station today. Though the site has been comprehensively restored, it lacks the lonely and decrepit charm of the stations elsewhere. The complex, built in 1907, consists of 16 buildings, which include a large workshop – with a restored WWI-era engine – shells of train carriages and a rebuilt Turkish fort that served as a resting place for pilgrims traveling to Mecca.
